WHAT ARE THEY?

So what exactly are these Dental Veneers? They are nothing more than a wafer-thin sheet of tooth colour material which is attached to the front of your teeth. The main material used in the cosmetic is porcelain as it mimics the looks of a real tooth enamel, reflecting light in a similar fashion. In terms of dentistry, “A veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth, veneers improve the aesthetics of a smile and/or protect the tooth's surface from damage.”

THE HISTORY OF PORCELAIN VENEERS

Since the late 1920s, veneers had been around to save the precious smile on people’s face and it all started from Hollywood. Dr. Charles Pincus, a dentist from California came up with a way to enhance the smiles of one of his Hollywood star patient. He came up with an acrylic tooth cap that fits over the person’s teeth. The stars would later wear them during their movie scenes.

Between the 1930s and 1950s, people started getting veneers to help shape their smiles. By 1950s, dentists were bonding veneers to teeth but were having a tough time to adhere it properly due to lack of technology. During the mid-1960s, Dr. Michael Bunocore figured out a method for adhering the veneers to teeth. He came up with a procedure for lightly etching the tooth’s surface with mild acid which created a bonding agent that helped veneers to stick on the tooth surface making them much more permanent and active.

The veneers were modified over decades and what procedure and materials we use now were developed till the 1980s. Veneers became more affordable and easier to place, which made them an easy and popular solution for people.
