Could turmeric potentially cure cancer?

Over the years, turmeric has been known to heal numerous ailments such as inflammation, arthritis, obesity, metabolic syndrome, liver disease, and neurodegenerative diseases due to the chemical compound curcumin, found in it. In this blog, SMBT will shed light on new research that proposes a thesis of turmeric being helpful in the treatment of cancer.

Turmeric has been an age-old cure for most health issues in every Indian household. This has caught on as a trend in recent times and been named the ‘golden latte’ or ‘turmeric latte’. But can it treat cancer? According to a review, 37% of 12,595 papers published about curcumin from 1924 to 2018 focus on the chemical as a treatment for cancer. The papers focus on breast cancer, lung cancer, blood cancer and cancers of the digestive system. The review concluded that curcumin is a “promising candidate” as an anticancer drug by itself or mixed with other drugs. Curcumin has influencing properties on a range of our cells, thus impacting the cancerous ones.

Yet, we have a long way to go. The review describes a number of challenges that we are to overcome. For instance, if ingested orally, curcumin immediately breaks down into metabolites, not getting a chance to get to a tumor. They found that a viable solution to this would be to encapsulate curcumin into a protein nanoparticle to ensure that it reaches the targeted areas of the body.

Experiments such as the aforementioned one and clinical trials are in process to find the best way for the curcumin chemical to help treat cancer. Who knows, maybe the cure to one of the world’s deadliest diseases has been in our pantries all along!
