Boost your Immunity in 9 simple ways!

Recent times have made us realise the importance of keeping up our immunity. Although the virus can affect anybody, we can always try our best to take the steps to keep ourselves as healthy as possible. This includes social distancing, wearing a mask and keeping up high levels of immunity. In this blog, SMBT describes some simple but effective ways of building your immune system.

Get enough sleep

Sleep helps our body rest and reset for a new day. This rest is essential to the upkeep of one’s immunity as well as for effectively fighting off infections. 7-8 hours of sleep is optimum for adults.

Consume whole plant food

Fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds and nuts are whole plant foods that are rich in antioxidants, nutrients and shield the body against harmful pathogens. They also contain fibre which helps with gut health and vitamin C which is a popular immunity booster.

Incorporate healthy fats in your diet

These include Ghee, salmon, olive oil, chia seeds, and more. They are anti-inflammatory agents and help decrease the chances of type 2 diabetes and/or heart disease. These also help fight off harmful bacteria and viruses.

Load up on probiotics

Foods such as yoghurt, kimchi and kefir are fermented foods which are rich in probiotics. Probiotics are a type of gut bacteria that are beneficial to our digestive system.  Gut health is vital to a healthy immune system. If fermented foods are not your thing, be sure to consume probiotic supplements to maintain your gut health.

Avoid added sugars

Added sugar and carbs lead to obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, which weakens the immune system. Avoiding or cutting off added sugars may lower inflammation and increase your immunity.

Workout!

We keep hearing this all the time, which proves how important it is for our health. As we all must know by now, exercising regularly has numerous benefits. A healthy immune system is just one of them! Studies show that just a single session of moderate exercise could boost the effectiveness of a vaccine amongst immunocompromised individuals. Brisk walks, jogs, bike rides, swims, hikes are all contributors to the quick and regular regeneration of immune cells and reduces inflammation.

Drink water!

Here is another tip that has been engraved in our minds. Dehydration greatly affects physical performance, digestion, mood, focus and kidney functions. All of which contribute to falling ill. It is essential to consume enough water, flavoured water, organic, unsweetened teas to maintain an optimum amount of hydration. A quick way to know if you are hydrated is to check the colour of your urine. If it is pale yellow, you are hydrated!
