What should we eat in the summer of 2021

Apart from the fuel prices, the temperature has been consistently increasing. To help our body adjust to the rising temperatures, we can eat foods that are suitable for summers and are seasonal. Some foods are not only easier to digest but also help our body cool down and protect us from the heat. Typically fruits and vegetables have a lot of water and nutrients and should form a large part of our diet.

The challenge every summer is the need to maintain energy levels despite not wanting to eat as much due to rising temperatures. There is a natural loss of desire to eat food every summer and we want to drink more fluids. In this SMBT blog, we discuss various foods that are good to consume in summer. The idea of the blog is to discuss the health benefits of these foods and this is not blanket advice for everyone. We recommend that you speak to a dietician and prepare a diet plan according to your health.

Watermelons

As the name suggests there is a lot of water in watermelons but that’s not it. Water melons are loaded with other nutrients that are important for us to beat the summer. Watermelon is a good source of lycopene, a nutrient that is good for heart health and is a great antioxidant. Also, watermelons are low on calories so you don’t have to worry a lot about calories when you consume them in normal quantities. Watermelons are versatile and can be consumed in its natural form or added to juices, salads etc.

Kokum

Kokum, also known as garcinia indica, is a popular seasonal fruit on the west coast of India and some other south Indian states. Kokum is a part of the mangosteen family and is typically found in the Western Ghats. Unlike other fruits, Kokum is not a popular fruit to eat directly, but is added to food for flavour and used by the pharmaceutical industry to exploit its healing properties. Kokum has been used traditionally to curb acidity and protect against sunstroke and dehydration.

Lemons

As cliche as this might sound, lemons are our best friends when it comes to tackling the summer. The versatility of lemons means we can use lemons in various recipes or simply have it with water. Apart from being an excellent source of Vitamin C, lemons are also great for your hair, skin and bones. Lemons are also said to help digestion, reduce the risk of cancer. Lemons are also a source of Vitamin B complex, calcium, iron and magnesium.

Mango

As discussed earlier, it is important to eat local and seasonal produce. Mango offers not just great taste but also multiple health benefits. Mangoes are great for your digestion and also help your skin recover from damage due to exposure to sunlight. Mangoes are also a great source of antioxidants and good for your heart. Mangoes are also rich in vitamins, help your eyesight and strengthen your overall immunity.

Curd

Curd has been an essential in Indian homes for years now. With better facilities to store curd, and more brands available in the market, curd is a great choice of food for summers. We are all aware of the digestive health benefits of curd but it is also a good source of protein. Curd is also great for your skin and improves your immunity. Curd is also said to reduce high blood pressure and help strengthen bones and teeth.

These were some foods that we thought of for consumption in summer. Can you think of more? Add them in the comments section below.
