WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY AWARENESS AT SMBT COLLEGE

Going one month into the recent celebration of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ on 31st May 2017, we would like to revisit and review all the efforts of SMBT Educational trust towards the growing menace of tobacco.
  • World No Tobacco Day?
World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. Observed around the world every year on May 31, World No Tobacco day is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption. It further intended to draw attention to massive negative health, environmental and social effects of tobacco. Tobacco directly causes nearly sixty lakh deaths each year worldwide, including six lakh non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 was “ Tobacco - a threat to development”, laying emphasis on the threats that the tobacco industry poses to sustainable development, including health and economic well-being of citizens in all countries.
  • Why Now?
It’s natural to ask what makes 30 June so special? With one month gone and risk of cancer looming, SMBT has taken a surge in research of diseases caused by tobacco consumption.
SMBT operates many initiatives, such as SMBT Ayurveda College, SMBT College of Pharmacy, SMBT Dental College, as well as SMBT College of Medical Sciences. These premier institutes are responsible for conducting extensive research on cancer-related studies. In the tribal and rural areas of Nandi Hills in the Sangamner and Igatpuri Talukas.
Recently, two Associate Professors from SMBT Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Center, Nandi Hills, Mr. Sushil Ahire and Mr. Kapil Palekar published an article on the awareness of oral cancer-related habits among college students in the Nasik city area.
The study focused on the importance of awareness, among all students involved in chronic smoking addiction. Many statistics were enumerated from a group of participants (mainly patients), and hemoglobin and serum iron contents in blood were analyzed. Today, SMBT, through its rural development leg, continues to educate the ‘ignorant’ masses in the tribal areas in and around Nashik zone.
The dedication, conviction, and altruism that the SMBT dominion has put in, is really appreciable!
  • The Future?
Today, SMBT, seeks to empower India as a whole, and evolve in the process of India’s giant leap into the 22nd Century. With a surge in research and experimentations by the various institutes of SMBT educational trust, Future looks promising to say the least. SMBT’s outreach to the nearby villages and towns will immensely help nearby population to combat growing threat of tobacco.
