How is tongue a window into your overall health?

SMBT Group of Institutions

Ever wondered why doctors check your tongue first when you tell them about your symptoms? The reason behind this is that our tongue is a good indicator of many systemic diseases in our body. Our tongue and mouth tissues are more transparent than your skin- so medical providers can more easily see signs of a medical condition beneath the surface.

The tongue can be a harbinger for the entire well-being of your body. In this blog, SMBT covers some of the most common tongue conditions doctors look for in a patient that can signal a larger health issue.

  • Dry tongue
Usually, a dry tongue and mouth stem from basic dehydration that people can easily cure with fluid intake. It can also indicate a condition called xerostomia, in which the mouth’s salivary glands do not produce enough saliva.

  • Burning tongue
Some people may experience a burning sensation on the surface of their tongues which is often accompanied by a metallic, bitter taste or a loss of taste as well as red patches on the tongue’s surface. These uncomfortable symptoms may trace back to a condition called geographic tongue, an inflammatory disorder that is linked with emotional stress, vitamin deficiencies, and hormonal imbalances. A burning tongue can also be an indication of burning mouth syndrome, where people experience a chronic sensation on their tongue.

  • Limited tongue motion
In addition to examining the tongue’s experience, dentists and doctors also consider the
tongue’s motion range. If a person has trouble swallowing or moving their tongue, they could have an infected salivary gland or a blocked salivary duct.

  • Enlarged tongue
In some people, an enlarged tongue can be a result of obesity. Studies show that an increase in body mass index is linked with a greater proportion of fat on the tongue. An enlarged tongue size can also be linked to sleep apnea, a condition where people have lapses in breathing while sleeping.

  • Tongue tremors
If a person’s speech changes or they face difficulty in swallowing, it could be a neurological condition. If the doctor notices that the tongue is shrinking or paralyzed, it could possibly be Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS, a condition causing the death of neurons that controls a person’s voluntary muscles.

  • Bright red tongue
It indicates basic nutritional deficiencies, most commonly, folic acid, and vitamin B-12, which can distort the tongue’s color.

Are Melatonin vapes safe to replace Nicotine ones?

SMBT Group of Institutions

Vapes & e-cigarettes have grown to become a sort of accessory for over 1 billion people over the world. A lot of whom are under the age of 18. This trend began with a myth that electronic cigarettes are less harmful to the body than regular cigarettes. But as the years went by, this was proven to be inaccurate information.

Although they are less harmful than cigarettes, they aren’t safer. They are certainly not the right path to quit smoking and not FDA approved as a smoking cessation tool. In fact, they are equally as addictive as regular cigarettes. Electronic cigarettes end up making their users consume higher amounts of nicotine than regular ones. The cartridges used in vapes come with varying doses of nicotine ranging from mild to strong, depending on the strength of the hit its user prefers.

Vapes have quickly become a popular trend amongst today’s teens. Research shows that in 2015, right around the time vapes were gaining popularity, their usage among highschool shot up by a shocking 900%! It was reported that 40% of teens using vapes were never smokers in the first place. The trend managed to convert people with no intention of and in some cases even people with an aversion to smoking, to take up the habit. This is due to the fact that e-cigarettes do not fall under the reputation that regular cigarettes have of having a nasty odor as well as taste and how smokers are not perceived as the most hygienic. Vapes, on the other hand, come in various flavors and do not leave an aftertaste or smell on the smoker.

It is safe to conclude that nicotine vapes are unsafe for our health based on the numerous illness and death cases reported in just the last few months. There is now, a new vape pen available in the market: melatonin vape. Melatonin is a brain chemical that regulates our sleep cycle. People who have sleep issues opt for melatonin supplements. There have been a few emerging melatonin vape brands that help de-stress your mind with a dose of melatonin and essential oils.

But is this safe? It is said that the side effects of melatonin include, headaches, temporary feelings of depression, dizziness, daytime sleepiness, stomach cramps, bad dreams, and irritability. It is also recommended to be consumed in controlled doses. Plus, it seems to be intended a very specific cause, i.e. sleeping. This automatically negates its use in the same manner as nicotine vapes. Nicotine e-cigarettes are recreational, used at parties or during smoke breaks whereas melatonin vapes seem to be recommended for therapeutic purposes.

According to the facts and figures gathered above, we can conclude that smoking of any kind does not seem like a safe or smart way of life. Whether it be a regular cigarette or an electronic one, or one filled with melatonin, it is easy for its current target audience, who are mostly under the age of 18, to get easily carried away and develop harmful ailments. Be smart about what you introduce to your body and remember, moderation is everything.
