5 healthy food combos to eat during winters

If anything can be said with certainty about the weather these days it's that we are witnessing extreme temperatures all around the country. To protect ourselves from changes in weather we need to make changes in our lifestyle, including what we eat.

In this blog, SMBT discusses 5 healthy food combos that will help your body better prepare for winters.

Carrots & Beetroot

A great addition to your diet in winters are carrots and beetroot. Both of these are typically grown after August and can aid your health in multiple ways. Beetroot for instance, is a good source of fibre, iron and vitamins. Beetroot’s health benefits include lower blood pressure and improved blood flow. People with diabetes should consult their dietician for the right portion or stick to carrots. Carrots are full of fibre, vitamins and minerals too and also improve eye health.

Spinach & Methi

Typically used alternatively or even together, spinach and methi are an important part of our diet. Spinach is rich in Vitamin A, iron and carotenoids among other things. Eating spinach is linked with stronger bones, better digestion, reduced oxidative stress and reduced blood pressure. Methi or fenugreek also has a host of vitamins and minerals and has anti inflammatory and digestive health benefits.

Almonds & Walnuts

You’d be nuts to not include Almonds and Walnuts in your diet. Most importantly these nuts will help you keep warm and protect your skin in winters. Almonds are also a good source of calcium. Like coconut oil, almond oil rich in Vitamin-E is beneficial for our skin and our scalp. Walnuts have a lot of antioxidants and the good fats including Omega-3 fatty acids.

Turmeric & Milk

The age old combination of ‘haldi ka doodh’ is a healthy combination to include in your diet. The antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties of turmeric are well known and milk contains essential fats required by the body apart from being a source of calcium and vitamins.

Adding a spoon of honey and a few of your favourite dry fruits and nuts will make sure you are getting the right nutrition this winter.

Sesame seeds & Jaggery

We have all had the ‘chikki’ during winters and never realised it was a powerfood!

Sesame seeds are a good source of healthy fats, manganese, iron and calcium while jaggery provides energy making it a wholesome combination. Jaggery also has digestive enzymes that help avoid constipation and have a host of minerals that are important for our body.

There are many other foods that are beneficial for us in winters and can help us beat the chill. Can you name some of them? Let us know in the comments below.
