In this SMBT blog, we discuss a few of these home remedies that can help you out. If the symptoms persist, make sure you take medical help.
Vitamin C can see you through
Vitamin C is a great nutrient that can help you fight the symptoms of the common cold and help your immunity in general. Vitamin C is said to decrease both the intensity and duration of the common cold. Before you pop a pill, always consult a doctor. You can otherwise opt for foods like lemons, oranges, and grapefruit which are high sources of Vitamin C.
Lozenges to the rescue
Sucking on lozenges can be an effective way to help with a sore throat, a symptom of the common cold. Usually high in zinc, lozenges help relieve the distress that an infection can cause and also help reduce coughing significantly. There are different lozenges available in the market that can help alleviate the symptoms of the common cold.
Water is Better
Have warm water or soup to help replace the fluids that your body has lost due to the cold. Do not have anything that is too sweet or has a lot of caffeine. Drinking enough water will help balance your body’s increased requirement for it. Dehydration has the exact opposite effect as it will perhaps worsen your cold and delay the natural recovery.
Rest is Best
Do not indulge in rigorous exercise till you recover from the cold. After you exercise, the body needs excess energy to help muscles recover from fatigue. The more you rest, the more your body will be able to fight the cold and you will get better faster. If you feel like it, take a short walk to help your body with better digestion and to get fresh air, but rest as much as possible.
Avoid smoking or drinking
Consuming alcohol or smoking can worsen your cold and delay the healing process. It also decreases the body’s natural ability to fight infections i.e. the immunity and hence will leave you worse off in your fight against cold. If you cannot stop it together then minimize it as much as possible and help your body fight the infection.
