5 Fad Diets to look out for!

The internet is brimming with easy weight loss tips & recipes that make weight loss look like a piece of cake. At times they become extremely popular amongst the masses. The reason for this can be any, whether it's a popular influencer advocating it on social media or a blogger singing its praises in their blog.

But more often than not, these fad diets do no more than cause rapid yet harmful weight loss to your body. Here are 5 such diets that do more harm than good when it comes to weight loss.

  • Liquid Diets

Liquid diets have been highly popular over time, whether it is the Cambridge diet or the Protein sparing modified fast. These diets focus on relying on liquid foods like smoothies on a daily basis. They suggest you consume less than 800 calories per day for up to 12 weeks. Though rapid weight loss is common in these diets due to lack of calories, a faster weight gain is seen post-diet. Many people even resort to binge-eating once the diets end.

  • Starch Blockers

Starch blockers, also known as Carb blockers are supplements that claim a faster weight loss without a proper diet or exercise. These contain extracts that intervene with the complex carbohydrate-breaking enzyme called alpha-amylase. They slow down the enzyme messing with the digestion of the carbohydrates. Since they can't completely block complex carb absorption in the body, their weight loss effect is often minimal.

  • Detoxes

Whether it's the DIY Detox water or the excessive water intake to pass out toxins from the body, the internet is filled with a number of detox diets. These diets offer you a quick weight loss recipe by apparently helping rid your body of the toxins. You are required to consume these detoxing liquids for up to 21 days and sometimes even suggested to give up solid foods entirely and resort to laxatives for a better cleanse. The problem with these diets is that even though they might seem to work initially since most of the weight loss is only the water in the body, they contain very low amounts of proteins. This can lead to muscle loss & even slow down your metabolism.

  • Eating a single food

It is better known as 'mono eating' or the 'monostrophic' eating diet amongst many. The diet concentrates on eating only a single food for many days at an end. You can eat foods like potatoes, fruits or eggs and nothing else for several days. What it does is that it induces automatic weight loss as you get tired of eating the same food and involuntarily reduces your calorie intake. But, this diet can also devoid you of essential nutrients necessary for the healthy growth of the body.

  • Fat-burners

Much like the starch blockers, the fat-burners are also a set of supplements that a lot of gym freaks resort to for a faster weight loss. These burners often contain ingredients like high amounts of caffeine. Though they can cause a paced weight loss in many cases, the ingredients can cause damage to the body. In many cases, damage to the liver is seen in those who regularly consume fat burners.

Internet diets, though sometimes useful are often based on more myths than facts. You need to be extremely careful when resorting to any diet for weight loss. Everyone has a different body and hence different nutritional requirements. What might work for one person, might not work for the other. The best bet, in this case, is to consult a dietician for an extensive weight loss plan consisting of both a successful diet and an exercise routine.
