RELEVANCE OF AYURVEDA IN TODAY’S WORLD

Blogger.valens@gmail.com

The word Ayurveda is composed of ‘Ayur’ meaning life and ‘Veda’ meaning science. When putting together, Ayurveda literally means the science of life. For a long time, the importance of Ayurveda was neglected, with modern science taking the front foot. But now, the world is slowly trying to explore the field of Ayurveda as modern science fails to solve some of our problems.

Why Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, as discussed earlier, is the science of life. It concentrates on the prevention of problems rather than finding ways to cure them later. In simple words. Ayurveda provides guidelines and lays out a set of instructions, that, when followed regularly, will lead to optimum utilization of one’s energy and balanced living. The basics of Ayurveda lies in seeing an individual as a part of the environment interacting with nature.

For example, according to Ayurveda, one must wake up before 10 am in the morning and have a bath, meditate, exercise, and have breakfast within two hours of waking up as Kapha, a quality associated with lethargy, dominates the human body in between 6 am to 10 am. Hence, an early rise will guarantee a fresh and energetic day. Similarly, all the heavy meals should be consumed between 10 am to 2 pm as the quality that is associated with fire and digestive aids, Pitta, is at its highest during this time. In the time period 2 pm to 6 pm, Vata energy is at its highest and aids in mental work and creativity. In the evening, Kapha energy again comes into play and the cycle completes.

This cycle, if noticed, goes in sync with the cycle of the sun (i.e, nature). Ayurveda is all about the observations made between the similarities of nature and humans and using those observations to live a life full of zeal and happiness. Ayurveda is a 5000-year-old philosophy based on a deep understanding of the human body as a whole, encompassing the mind, spirit and emotions. It embraces medical science, philosophy, psychology as well as environmental factors.

Like the world accepted the benefits of Yoga and meditation that has its roots from India and its time that it will soon start acknowledging the importance of this Indian science as well. The holistic approach of Ayurveda insists on finding natural cures to our problems. It is a sustainable system of healing that is available to all and works in harmony with the natural world. Ayurvedic healing tools are easily available and the central message of Ayurveda is, “let food be your medicine and kitchen be your first pharmacy”.

At S.M.B.T Ayurved College and Hospital, we train our students and treat our patients with the mission of reminding them of the power of Indian roots and the vision to surpass the conventional approach to medical science. At S.M.B.T Ayurved College and Hospital, students learn the ways of improving lifestyle by amalgamating traditional Ayurveda with modern medicine.

SMBT’s coming up with a brand-new Oncology Centre

Blogger.valens@gmail.com

There are more than 3 million prevalent cases of cancer in India, though the real number is likely tripled due to a large number of cases left undetected and unreported. India is projected to see 1.23 million new cancer cases a year, with 20% increase expected by 2020, leading to 1.7 million new cases a year by 2035.

The survival rate disparity is stunning. In India, 70% of new cases leads to death within a year; it can be close to reverse in the U.S. and elsewhere. Millions are dying from cancer, prematurely, without ever knowing they had the disease.
To address these enormous concerns, the solution must be two-pronged: Indians need to be better educated on the disease and we need to have better, more affordable access to early diagnosis as well as timely treatment.

SMBT Trust proposes to start an Oncology Centre
SMBT Trust is coming up with a state of art ‘Oncology Centre’ at our Nandi Hills campus. It will be a one of a kind hospital with the latest technology and quality equipment specifically concentrating on Radiation Oncology, Surgical Oncology and Medical Oncology. We are planning to setup 100 beds into the hospital, with special rooms and ICU.

Our aim is to:
1. Increase mortality and mobility from cancer, and improve the quality of life for cancer patients.
2. Excel in basic, translational and clinical research and in the application of fundamental knowledge to prevent and cure cancer, and to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
3. Safely and compassionately provide the full range of evidence based, preventive, diagnostic, therapeutic, supportive and patient focused services to cancer patient and their families.
4. Lead in cancer education of health professionals, scientists, patients and their families, and the community at large.

We, truly are looking forward to the development of the ‘Oncology Centre’, which will give us an opportunity to save people from the one disease that is the cause of thousands of casualties every year.
This, we believe will take us a step closer to fulfilling our goal of providing a full-fledged healthcare university for the common people located in the region of North Maharashtra.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF IN THIS WEATHER

Blogger.valens@gmail.com

Monsoon is a very expressive and beautiful form of nature welcoming seasonal change. Although it is a favourite season for a lot of us, it is always recommended that we take care of health to be able to enjoy this season to the fullest.

Following are the steps that can help you have a healthy experience of this monsoon:

1. Food and Water

Take care of the food that you choose to eat this season. It is ideally recommended that you avoid food from street vendors or new places you aren’t confident about regarding the hygiene they follow while cooking. The environment also makes it easier for germs and viruses to spread in this season, thus making home food more advisable. Take adequate amount of vitamins and nutrients in the form of fruits, vegetables and protein rich food to strengthen your immunity.
Avoid drinking water from random sources and try to stick to sterilized water for this season to ensure quality and hygienic water for your body as the risk of taking contaminated water is high.

2. Enjoying the rains

A lot us intentionally get wet in the rain to relish the experience of it but rain water isn’t good for your body. Always take a shower after getting wet in rain water to wash away the impure toxic substances rain water may contain. This action itself can keep you away from infections and diseases caused by the impure state of rainwater.

3. Personal Hygiene

It is very important to maintain your personal hygiene in this climate where spreading of viruses and bacteria is fast. Don’t touch your face with dirty hands as there are chances of viruses and germs entering your body through your nose, ears etc. Wet and dirty garments become a ground for germ growth therefore change clothes often and avoid staying long in wet clothes.

4. Maintaining environment

The risk of water borne diseases is high due to the rains thus ensuring quality of the water you drink should be made top priority. Diseases and viruses can also spread due to contaminated water so ensure there is no stagnant water which can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes near you. Use mosquito repellants and check for clog free plumbing system at your house to avoid malaria and other microbial diseases. Always wear dry shoes and clothes to avoid skin infections due to the dampness.

5. Essentials

Always carry a raincoat or an umbrella to make sure you don’t get wet due to sudden rains. Using of sanitizers is also recommended to keep you away from bacteria and viruses. Avoid mosquitoes by adopting mosquito repellants and nets to keep your environment free from them. Keep your clothes and surrounding dry.

SMBT knows that doctors will solve your problems but we also understand that prevention is the best for your health, which is our top priority. Follow the precautions as listed above to take care of yourself this season. Your health is the real treasure you need to protect. Life is only memorable when you’re healthy enough to live it peacefully.

STUDY TIPS FOR MBBS STUDENTS

SMBT Group of Institutions

In the face of harsh reality, students today have to deal with immense competition. We are preparing students towards becoming an element of future where they play a crucial role in sustaining it. The expectations the world has from the field of medicine puts immense pressure on them thus making MBBS students require the right type of guidance to give them more clarity and assurance about themselves.

Study Tip 1: Being organised

It is really important to sort out the amount of time you must dedicate towards your college and research during leisure time. Medicine is an elaborate course where the student must spend extra 4-5 hours after college to master the terminology and get more clarity regarding the topics discussed in their classes. Have a schedule to follow and get used to it.
Keep the schedule flexible so that your attitude towards everyday tasks doesn’t become rigid. The more time you dedicate towards refining your knowledge, the more your proficiency.

Study Tip 2: Stay Healthy

As a medical student, your future will be centred around being held responsible towards helping others take care of their health. To become a successful doctor, you must first learn to take care of yourself and be able to perform efficiently. Have an adequate amount of sleep and eat healthy food. Stay away from vices that disguise themselves as stress busters.
Taking breaks is also an important habit to make sure your body gets enough of rest while being a part of an intensely active schedule.

Study Tip 3: Learn about Medicine

Read journals and articles related to medicine and update yourself with comments and happenings in the field of medicine all over the world. When you prioritize book knowledge, you get habituated to mugging up and only knowing facts.
External sources teach you the way you must combine facts and common knowledge in order to be able to apply it in an efficient manner in reality.

Study Tip 4: Staying Motivated

Medicine is a strenuous course in which you might be facings ups and downs regarding your performance. The key is to not let few poor performances decide your entire mindset and attitude towards your tests. Don’t get discouraged and stay motivated enough to be willing to put in more effort into areas which require it.
Talk to seniors and understand how not performing well in one test doesn’t equal to an unsuccessful career. The hard work you put in will definitely reap benefits so keep moving forward positively.

Study Tip 5: Love what you do

Medicine is a service towards the public. You must full-heartedly be able to make optimum use of your time and deliver work of the highest quality. Keep the fire of your curiosity burning and pay keen interest towards your classes and the knowledge people are willing to impart. Once you start loving the process of becoming a knowledgeable person, your journey of learning will never end and will keep taking you ahead in life.

Study Tip 6: Be Innovative

Customize the way you learn to suit your grasping ability and interest. Adopt different methods of memorizing details and maintain notes of your own so that understanding concepts becomes easy for you. Have creative ways of remembering important topics so that you don’t get bored of learning.
Focus on your goals and work hard towards achieving them. There is no excuse that will truly justify a distraction that pulled you back in your career. Stay positive and learn to recognize the effort you’ve put towards improving yourself and reward yourself with the scope of being the best in the world.

An ancient system of medicine, which traces its roots back to the Vedic times, Ayurveda stresses on holistic health, which not only provides soothing and curative medicines but also plays a vital role in prevention of recurring diseases. According to Ayurveda, all ailments are understood as imbalance between three elements of the human body Kapha, Pitta and Vata. These elements are commonly called as Doshas in Ayurvedic terminology. Kapha means Phlegm (water and earth), Pitta means Bile (fire and water) and Vata means wind (air and space). The technique of Ayurveda allows you to indulge in natural healing capabilities of human body and nature. However, one cannot expect a speedy recovery, because it takes a little longer than conventional allopathic treatments. It’s an all-encompassing technique which requires changes in diet, lifestyle and habits.

BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) is a graduate degree in field of Ayurvedic science. It is a 5 ½ year degree course with academic session for 4 ½ years and 1 year is dedicated to internship programme with live practical. After completion of this degree, one must mandatorily resister him/herself at the respective councils (under Indian Medical Central Council Act). Also, to practice across the country, registration under Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) is a must.
Further, the scope of Ayurveda is ever increasing not only in India but also in the world. In many cases, when the usual allopathy fails to deliver expected results, Ayurveda comes to the rescue of patients, providing effective treatment and rejuvenating them. Naturally, it opens wide doors for those with a BAMS degree seeking career opportunities, regional as well as global.
  • You can work as medical officer/doctor in government or private Ayurveda hospitals.
  • With advanced degrees like MD and PhD, an ayurvedic doctor can qualify for supervisory/research/teaching position in various Universities or organizations.
  • One can start his/her own practice or set up a retail shop for ayurvedic medicine.
  • There is a high demand in the pharmaceutical industries for ayurvedic doctors to regulate/monitor the drug research.
  • Staring salaries for BAMS graduates ranges between INR20,000-40,000 monthly, whereas with an MD one can expect around INR50,000-80,000 per month.
  • With newer diseases coming up every other day, a study in Ayurveda not only promises secure income but also provides numerous opportunities to serve the society as a whole.

5 New Cardiac Technologies to look out for

SMBT Group of Institutions

For most of the 19th century, doctors used most of the medicals tools that fit easily in their little medkit bag, and diagnoses were based more on instinct than on science. The advancement and discovery of various antibiotics, lifesaving drugs and equipment have contributed tremendously to increase the lifespan of a human being on average of nearly 30 years. It’s easy to see how advances in health and medicine have touched the lives of nearly every person on the planet, whether its technology that allows us to peek deep into or body or the medicines that extend the lives of those with unimaginable and sufferable chronic disease.

Here are 5 innovative cardiac technologies that will change the outlook of the coming future:

1) GOOGLE GLASSES

Google Glasses are one of the best known wearable technologies made. They are similar to any other spectacle with preloaded options of taking pictures and recording videos in HD and wireless transmission. Cardiologists have successfully used the equipment in cardiac surgeries. They are used for coronary angiography where the cardiologist takes accurate, precise and resolute pictures of heart artilleries and could transfer the images to computers or Ipads.

2) BIORESORBABLE STENTS

During an operation, the cardiologist needs to perform an open artery surgery where they push a mesh tube called stent that releases drugs into the vessel to keep it open. But using the stent over time might cause blood clotting and to overcome the disastrous consequences a new type of stent that gradually dissolves within a year or so may help sidestep that problem. They also enable treated vessels to regain their ability to constrict and expand.

3) LEADLESS PACEMAKER

A PaceMaker is a device for stimulating the heart muscle and regulating its contractions. It consists of a small battery-operated power source implanted under the skin. PaceMakers these days are of top quality, the only faulty part of them is the lead which they use which cause complications or an infection at the insertion site. The leadless pacemaker is a tiny, self-containing unit which is placed on the inside wall of the heart through a thin, flexible tube called catheter. The new model of the pacemaker does look promising without any after effects.

4) VALVE-IN-VALVE PROCEDURE

Compared to mechanical valves that carry a high risk of blood clotting, heart valves made from animal tissues (bioprosthetic valves) are increasingly used to replace stiff, narrowed aortic valves. Bioprosthetic valve is inserted into the heart via a catheter at the site of the failing device.it turns out to be the best valve replacement option for people at high risk from surgery.

5) PROTEIN PATCH FOR HEART MUSCLE GROWTH

The cells cannot fully regenerate and scar tissues form when heart muscle cells suffer damage and die. It makes the heart harder for the heart to pump blood effectively and ultimately leads to heart failure. Recently, a team of health and bioengineering experts discovered a natural protein that can promote the growth of normal tissues. Human clinical trials are yet to take place on the patch in the upcoming year and it goes holds a bright future for bioengineering

How Dental Veneers saved our smiles

SMBT Group of Institutions

A beautiful smile full of healthy white teeth is all any person would wish for. Factors such as age, hereditary, lifestyle and accidents can contribute to a smile that is less than perfect. You might wonder how to get a smile you’ve always wanted, well in this modern age there is one solution which you might choose from your local dentist. “Dental Veneers” can give you a whiter and brighter smile. Keep reading to learn more about dental veneer.

WHAT ARE THEY?

So what exactly are these Dental Veneers? They are nothing more than a wafer-thin sheet of tooth colour material which is attached to the front of your teeth. The main material used in the cosmetic is porcelain as it mimics the looks of a real tooth enamel, reflecting light in a similar fashion. In terms of dentistry, “A veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth, veneers improve the aesthetics of a smile and/or protect the tooth's surface from damage.”

THE HISTORY OF PORCELAIN VENEERS

Since the late 1920s, veneers had been around to save the precious smile on people’s face and it all started from Hollywood. Dr. Charles Pincus, a dentist from California came up with a way to enhance the smiles of one of his Hollywood star patient. He came up with an acrylic tooth cap that fits over the person’s teeth. The stars would later wear them during their movie scenes.

Between the 1930s and 1950s, people started getting veneers to help shape their smiles. By 1950s, dentists were bonding veneers to teeth but were having a tough time to adhere it properly due to lack of technology. During the mid-1960s, Dr. Michael Bunocore figured out a method for adhering the veneers to teeth. He came up with a procedure for lightly etching the tooth’s surface with mild acid which created a bonding agent that helped veneers to stick on the tooth surface making them much more permanent and active.

The veneers were modified over decades and what procedure and materials we use now were developed till the 1980s. Veneers became more affordable and easier to place, which made them an easy and popular solution for people.

BENEFITS OF DENTAL VENEERS
  • Veneers can last as long as 10 to 15 years, with a proper caring.
  • Veneers are made to match your tooth colour
  • Veneers are stronger than composite resin.
  • Porcelain veneers are resistant to staining, unlike teeth whitening which requires touch up treatments every twice a year.
  • Veneers can improve teeth that are chipped and cracked. They also cover up the broken and discoloured teeth.
  • Increases a person’s self-assurance and emotional wellness.

If you want to learn more on this topic and want to pursue it as a career option, SMBT is the best place to do so.

MEDICAL MYSTERIES

Blogger.valens@gmail.com

Medical Industry has developed and advanced in past 50 years. New treatments, various type of modern equipment, vaccines are being introduced for a better and healthy life for human beings. However, there comes a speed bump in this ever-advancing field. Diseases, genetic conditions, and conundrums rise from almost any part of the world and leave even the best and well-equipped scientists and doctors baffled.

Here is a list of medical mysteries which shook even the renowned medical facilities.

1) Water Allergy

Yes, there's this disease where individuals are allergic to water. It does sound impossible as our own body contains 70% water. They can still drink water and other stuff, its water that comes in contact with the body that causes the problem. The victim's skin starts to erupt in itchy red welts when they take a bath or shower. This rare condition is known medically as aquagenic urticaria. It first came to light in 1964. Its cause is still a mystery, but doctors deduced that it might be due to toxic response when water touches the skin, or due to extreme sensitivity to ions in water.

2) Chimeric People

It's a strange anomaly. Imagine a person went through a genetic test and found out that he/she is not the biological father/mother- despite the fact that he/she gave birth to them. It was an unfeigned case that Margot Kruskal, a doctor at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, came face to face with such five years ago. The patient needed a kidney transplant, and so her family underwent blood tests to see if any of them would make a suitable donor. When the results came back, she was hoping for good news. Instead, she received a hammer blow. The letter told her outright that two of her three sons could not be hers. No one knows how common chimeras are but due to changing evolution and genetic diversification, cases like such might come to light.

3) Foreign Accent Syndrome

You woke up in the morning with an accent different than what you have been using since all these years. Chances are that you are suffering from Foreign Accent Syndrome. The best-known case of this syndrome dates way back to 1941, where a Norwegian woman was repudiated after she was injured during an air raid and began talking with a heavy German accent. This syndrome was once contemplated as a psychological disorder but later was ruled out for being a neurological disorder which comes about when a stroke or injury damages the part of the brain associated with speech.

4) Tree man

We all have heard of this syndrome, haven't we ? Dede, a man from West Java, Indonesia, appeared to be half man, half tree. But what was the reason for this deformation ? Thankfully this mystery has been recently solved. It appeared that a rare immune deficiency which allows the human papillomavirus, better known as warts when goes out of control, thickening of skin takes place which starts spreading across the whole body.

5) Putrid finger

A distressing case study was found from a 1996 issue of the medical journal The Lancet. A 29-year-old man had pricked his fingers on a chicken bone 5 years previously, leaving him with an infection which made him smell terrible.

"The most disabling consequence of the infection was a putrid smell emanating from the affected arm , which could be detected across a large room , and when confined to a smaller examination room became almost intolerable”, the paper states.

The cause of the infection was identified and the wound did not respond to any antibiotics. The patient was treated by a dermatologist at Peter Holt of the University Hospital of Wales where it was later reported that the patient's infection cleared up spontaneously, and he no longer smells putrid. But the case still remains a mystery .

Medical Innovations to look forward to in 2018

Blogger.valens@gmail.com

2017 has seen its share of medical breakthroughs and pioneering research work. Its evident that the future of healthcare is going to change dramatically with medical and dental technology. With some ready to go and other still in development, these medical innovations, advances are certain to have a dramatic impact on health care.
Here are some of the medical breakthroughs just over the horizon that could have a profound impact on your life.

1. Centralized Monitoring of Hospital Patients-

Reports indicate that up to 45% of inpatient cardiac arrest are not detected appropriately. This is due to hospitals having “alarm fatigue” when busy caregivers become desensitized to the constant noise emanating from cardiac telemetry monitoring systems. “Centralized monitoring has emerged as the answer, as part of a "mission control" operation in which off-site personnel uses advanced equipment, including sensors and high-definition cameras to monitor blood pressure, heart rate, respiration and more. Complex data are assimilated to trigger on-site intervention when appropriate while filtering out unimportant alarms.”, says Dr. Faulkner, Ohio State University Hospital.

2. Enhanced Recovery After Surgery-

The concept of “fast track” or “enhanced” recovery after the surgery has been under development since past few years. As for decades the common procedure before any surgery was to not eat before surgery, using pain medications, staying in bed during recovery. To substantial growth in medical technology, innovators are overhauling post- surgery strategies, and delivering imposing results. The ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) procedure permits the patient to eat before surgery, limits opioids by prescribing alternative medicines and encourages regular walking which reduces compilation rates and speed recovery.

3. The Emergence of Distance Health-

Bringing the healthcare environment to the patient's home has been a dream goal for scientist and doctors for decades. It will help the patient as well as the doctor as it will remove the “traveling barriers” which will result in the optimal outcome as well as significant cost saving. Hospitals are getting ready for a widespread adoption of the technology in 2018 due to an increase in connectivity through mobile technology and consumer demand. The patients will be equipped with attachable devices that record and report medical information to doctor to monitor their condition. Over 19 million patients are projected to use these remote monitoring devices in 2018.

4. Neuromodulation to Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea-

Sleep apnea is the most common sleep disturbance which can leads to high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. While continuous positive airway pressure device, (C.P.A.P.) is the gold standard treatment, it is estimated that more than 40% of sleep apnea patients refuse to wear the device. Innovators have found out a way to help such people. The device acts like a pacemaker which helps to synchronize the intake of air with the action of the tongue and is controlled by a remote or a wearable patch. These neuromodulation systems have had positive results in clinical testing and are to be gifted to the world this year.

5. Laser Dentistry-

Medical experts use lasers, which are focused light beam at one point, to remove or alter tissues of a small amount. It will help the patient to enjoy the dental experience as the dentist won't need a drill or administer anesthesia. Dentists use lasers for a variety of procedures involving the inside of the mouth, be it to remove overgrown tissue, to whiten teeth, or to reshape the gums. Also, lasers can reduce symptoms and healing times associated with traditional therapies; reduce the number of bacteria in both diseased gum tissue and in tooth cavities, and control bleeding during surgery.
